Heroes Emerge from Fort Stewart Shooting Tragedy
Six unarmed
soldiers at Fort Stewart, Georgia, showed remarkable courage on August 6, 2025,
when they confronted and subdued Sergeant Quornelius Radford, 28, who fired on
fellow service members with a personal handgun. Their swift actions prevented
further casualties and saved lives in what officials describe as a workplace
shooting.
Heroic Response
Under Fire
Army Secretary
Dan Driscoll praised the soldiers' bravery, stating they ran at and tackled an
armed person who was actively shooting at their comrades. The honorees—Staff
Sgt. Turner, Sgt. Arnold, First Sgt. Joshua Arnold, Sgt. Taylor, Sgt. Pacheco,
and Sgt. Eve Rodarte—were each awarded Meritorious Service Medals for their
courage.
Critical Actions
Taken:
• One soldier
tackled the gunman while he was shooting.
• Another
immediately jumped on the suspect to subdue him.
• The remaining
soldiers provided quick medical help to their injured comrades.
• Their rapid
response to stop bleeding "certainly saved lives," according to
surgeons.
Suspect Profile
and Investigation
Sergeant Radford, an automated logistics specialist from Jacksonville, Florida, had never been deployed and joined the Army in January 2018. He had a recent DUI arrest in May 2025, which his chain of command only learned of after the shooting. All five injured soldiers are expected to make a full recovery, with three already discharged from the hospital.
The incident took place in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area, a unit that had recently returned from deployment in Europe during the summer of 2024. Radford is currently in pre-trial confinement while the investigation continues
